Commodore’s Message, Spring 2020

Sean Gilday, LBSC Commodore 2020

Welcome to the 2020 Sailing Season. As I write this message, the world is struggling with a serious Pandemic and we’re all trying figure out how we will get back to some form of normalcy. As the new Commodore for LBSC, my first thought goes out to our membership and the hope that everyone in our sailing and Lake of Bays community stays healthy. The LBSC Board is staying on top of all Ontario Government, Sail Canada, and Sail Ontario communications with respect to operational directives for programs like ours. We appreciate the challenges that come with the uncertainty of knowing how the summer will play out. We are monitoring the risk landscape closely for our sailors and staff and, of course, their health and safety is our paramount concern and priority. We are examining and assessing various scenarios of how to run the program in ways that accommodate the safety issues in the event that the government determines that the program can proceed.

In the meantime, and in order to be ready for the summer, we have all our summer staff on standby waiting and poised to get the club and fleet prepped for the summer. We are delighted to report that Jack Shields is our new Head Instructor and he will be working with David Woodside, our Junior Program Director, to implement a safe, fun, and healthy program this summer. No matter what happens with the summer we have a legacy of great past summers to remember and the knowledge that we will have more amazing summers to come.

We will be sharing more up to date information for our summer on the LBSC website as we get those details.

Stay Healthy and please join me in thanking all the Healthcare Workers that are working hard in a difficult environment!

Meet Our New Commodore – Peri Wiseman

LBSC Commodore Peri Wiseman

Summer 2018 brings LBSC a new Commodore. Peri Wiseman succeeds Sandy Forsyth as head of the Club. We checked-in with Peri in February to find out more about her history with LBSC. Here’s what she said:

“Hi, I’m Peri…

I’m so honoured to be serving as the new Commodore of the Lake of Bays Sailing Club. My husband Sheldon and I have cottaged on Lake of Bays for more than 20 years. Our children, Micaela and Max, both spent their summers on the lake, joining LBSC as soon as they were old enough to enter Young Salts. They participated in a variety of programs at the Lake of Bays Tennis Club and at Bigwin Golf Club, too. Max is currently an LBSC coach; he really wishes I was not on the Board!

I became involved with the the sailing club before our children even attended the junior program. It began with Sheldon and me attending the Annual Dinner Dance, which led to his joining the board and my regular involvement in helping set up and run the dance. We have made so many dear friends along the way. I truly cherish my connection with LBSC!

For the past five years I’ve served on the Board of Directors.  I’ve been the Junior Program Director for the past four. It is now my great privilege to serve as Commodore. I look forward to working with the very committed group of individuals that make up LBSC’s current Board of Directors.

I invite you to get involved with the Lake of Bays Sailing Club. Come to some of our social events this summer, enrol your kids and teens in junior programs, attend the August Regatta, or come for a sail! I guarantee you’ll make lasting summer friends.

I also invite you to join us Saturday, June 30 for Cheers to Summer, a casual meet-and-greet at the Club to kick off Summer 2018. Hope to see you then!”
